While Nicolas Appert’s initial success using glass bottles sealed with cork and wax was revolutionary for preserving food for years, glass proved inadequate for the rough handling and bulk shipping required by developing industries and militaries. The major transition toward industrial scalability occurred when Peter Durand took Appert's core concept—heating food inside an airtight container—and adapted it to a much more robust material. Durand patented the use of tin cans. Tin containers offered superior durability, resistance to breakage, and ease of stacking and transport, which were essential factors for moving preservation beyond localized use and into large-scale, reliable commercial distribution.
